KIOCL Limited, a Miniratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Steel, is a pioneer in the country’s iron ore mining and pelletization industry. Established in 1976, it operates a 3.5 million tonne per annum (MTPA) iron-oxide pellet plant and a blast furnace unit in Mangaluru. In early 2025, the Indian Steel Ministry proposed a strategic merger between KIOCL and the iron ore major NMDC to enhance operational synergies and export capabilities. Furthering its domestic reach, KIOCL planned to commence annual supplies of at least 2 million metric tonnes of pellets to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) starting August 2025. The company also recently transitioned out of the 100% Export Oriented Unit (EOU) scheme to focus on the domestic market. As of December 2025, the President of India remains the most prominent investor, holding a 99.03% stake in the company.
